Lake Oswego man sentenced to 12 years in domestic violence case

A man who left a gaping head wound on his wife after cutting her with a kitchen knife was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his crimes.

Zelaja Alonna Battles, of Lake Oswego, was charged in a Washington County Courthouse with attempted murder, second-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon after an argument with his wife lead to violence.

His wife, Julie Battles, had called 9-1-1 saying she and her husband were arguing. When officers rang the doorbell, she said her husband saw them through the window, went to kitchen, got a knife and stabbed her - all before the officers came through the unlocked door.

Read the story when Zelaja Battles was arraigned and read the original story by KATU On Your Side Investigator Anna Song.

Make your plans now to get the H1N1 vaccine in Lake Oswego

On Feb. 23-24, head out to the Lake Oswego High School Cafeteria from 3:30-7 p.m. for an H1N1 flu vaccine clinic.

Due to the large turnout at the Jan. 25 clinic, Clackamas County officials will add vaccinators and other staff who will provide for approximately 100 vaccinations per hour. The county will also be using time-ticketed forms.

Students who did not receive an H1N1 vaccine at their school clinic may wish to take advantage of this opportunity to receive the vaccine.

Please Note: These clinics will serve as an opportunity for students under the age of 10 to receive their second vaccine dose. Clackamas County will not be providing second clinics at each elementary school for this purpose. (Children 10 and older do not need a second dose).

For the February 23 - 24 clinics, this includes students from all Lake Oswego School District elementary schools.

These free clinics are open to students, staff, family members and the Lake Oswego general public.

Deer kill, coyotes spark concern near Tyron Creek park

PORTLAND, Ore. – A southwest Portland resident said he has some concern after finding a deer that may have been killed by coyotes near his home.

Jesse Brown found the deer carcass in the backyard of his southwest Portland home on Monday. His property is located just north of Tryon Creek State Park, which is near Lake Oswego.

In a conversation with KATU News, Brown said it appears that coyotes have been returning to the carcass to feed.

Brown even videotaped a coyote behind his house last April.

Biologists said the feeding pattern on the carcass is the kind coyotes would leave behind.
