Lake Oswego's Kaunitz leads Lakers to second-place at state swim meet | Community Spirit

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- The Lake Oswego High School girls swim team finished second last weekend at the OSAA Class 6A Oregon State Swim Championships at Mount Hood Community College.
Sarah Kaunitz led the way, winning four events -- the 100 breaststroke, the 200 individual medley, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. Because of her efforts, Kaunitz was named the MVP of the meet as she scored the most points out of any swimmer for her team.
Along with Kaunitz, Catherine Yee, Celia Keany and Abby Lyons were members of the 400 freestyle state championship. Hannah Cutts, Keany and Lyons were also members of the state championship 200 freestyle relay teams. Yee also placed second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 freestyle. Cutts placed eighth in the 500 freestyle and 12th in the 200 freestyle. Keany placed fourth in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle. Also for the Lakers, Lyons finished ninth in the 50 freestyle.
As a team, Jesuit won the state title with 182 points while Lake Oswego scored 150 points. Nearby Lakeridge placed third with 105 points.
While the girls team placed second, the Lake Oswego boys team finished sixth at the state meet. Daniel Chen finished second in the 50 freestyle, fifth in the 100 backstroke, fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and eighth in the 200 medley relay. Luke Marshall placed fourth in the 200 freestyle relay, eighth in the 200 medley relay, sixth in the 100 breaststroke and eighth in the 200 individual medley. Teammates Wyatt Hayden and David Ainsworth placed fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and eighth in the 200 medley relay.
Also at Lake Oswego High School, several members of the wrestling team qualified for the state meet. Austin Faunce won the regionals at 195 pounds while Turner Young placed second in the 220-pound weight class. Teammate Paul Carson took fourth in the 182-pound weight class and Cahleb Gonzalez was fourth in the 106-pound weight class. The OSAA Class 6A State Wrestling Championships will take place Friday and Saturday at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
The Lakers girls ski team also recently won the Three Rivers League championship while the Lakers boys team placed fourth. Combined, the Lakers finished third place. Both teams will be skiing at the Oregon Interscholastic Ski Racing Associations’ (OISRA) State Alpine Championship event from Feb. 29 to March 2 at Mount Hood Meadows.
