Westside Christian High School earns sixth straight state title

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Westside Christian High School's Concert Choir competed against four other 3A finalists to defend ITS title at this year's OSAA 3A State Choir Competition held May 3 at George Fox University. With a final aggregate score of 310 points, Westside once again earned the State title.

For more than a decade Westside's choir has consistently ranked among the top three choirs in the state and has achieved first in State a total of eight times. This year's win meant six consecutive State Championship titles.

Going into the State Competition, the pressure was on for Westside Christian High School's Concert Choir members. "It is hard enough to win a State title two years running, but we were set to compete for a sixth consecutive championship," said Emily Eitzen, senior and president of Westside's Concert Choir. "There were a number of schools out there aiming to unseat us. You can bet that both the anticipation and the pressure were immense."

Westside Christian High seniors tackle significant community concerns

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- seniors at Westside Christian High School -- 58 of them -- will display their senior leadership projects on Exhibition Night slated for 7-9 p.m. May 8 in Westside's gym in Lake Oswego. Additionally, 20 of the students (or student teams) will be giving 15-minute oral presentations of their projects. The event is open to the general public.

This capstone program encompasses a series of cumulative exercises that span all four years at Westside. Students began with a quote from Frederich Buechner, "The place God calls you to is where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."

Under the individual guidance of a mentor, each student began by identifying significant life experiences that have shaped him or her as well as people or social issues for which he or she has developed a concern. Students also did a number of self-discovery exercises designed to help them identify "their deep gladness" or passions. They wrote mission and vision statements and helped one another dream about a project that would reflect their personal passions while addressing one of the world's significant needs.

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Westside Christian High School 2008 alumna Siri Carlson was recently awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship grant to work in Thailand for a year, beginning this October.

The grant covers all living expenses, travel, book stipends, an orientation in Washington, DC, and a one-month language and culture orientation in Bangkok.

While there she will fully integrate into her host community and increase her language skills and knowledge of the country while teaching conversational English in a secondary school setting. "I hope to continue to broaden my perspectives about God, people, and the world ... to challenge myself to become a better person and a better teacher by learning how to respond to difficult situations and interact with all types of people," said Carlson.
